Hydraulic excavators with backhoe buckets are used on every earthworks site worldwide. They are used for excavating construction pits and moving soil. They are usually characterised by a 360° rotating superstructure with a boom at the end of which an attachment is mounted. The boom and attachment are moved hydraulically. In contrast to a wheel loader, a backhoe excavator is able to work significantly below or above its own standing level thanks to its boom, which can be raised and lowered over long ranges. A quick-change device is usually installed between the attachments mentioned below and the excavator arm so that the excavator operator can change the attachments in the shortest possible time without leaving his cab.
Mini excavators or small excavators with a weight of around 0.5 t to 6 t, which run on rubber tracks, have established themselves as the smallest category. Starting from an adjustable width of less than 1 metre, they can even be used for special tasks inside buildings. These machines have become indispensable for any construction company or gardening and landscaping project and are also hired out by private users in large numbers from hire companies on an hourly or daily basis.
