Finishing mowers are mainly used for grassland maintenance and are an indispensable part of landscape maintenance. But how does a finishing mower work and what advantages does it have over other grassland maintenance equipment, such as the flail mower?
Technical details of finishing mowers
Just like a lawn mower, a finishing mulcher cuts the grass cuttings using fast-rotating, horizontal blades. The individual cutting height is adjusted via wheels and, if necessary, an additional rear support roller. As the mown material should be shredded as much as possible in order to decompose quickly, the cutting height is limited so that the material is not blown out of the mulcher housing before it is shredded. With the finishing mulcher, the cuttings are evenly distributed on the ground by the rotating blades.
finishing mulcher application area
Mulching has various benefits for the soil, as it not only improves soil quality, but also protects against erosion and reduces water evaporation and weed pressure. The particular advantage of a sickle-shaped mulcher compared to a flail mulcher is its significantly lighter design. Tractors with smaller engine power can therefore use finishing mowers with a larger working width, which would not be possible with a flail mower. Sickle bar mowers generally have a better cutting pattern, as the grass is not chopped off, as is the case with flail mowers, but rather cut off, provided the blades are sharpened. This may be irrelevant for normal meadows, but car parks can benefit from the nicer cut.
What are the disadvantages of a finishing mower?
The rapidly rotating blades make the finishing mower susceptible to wear and damage from foreign objects and stones. The blades of a finishing mower are not suitable for shredding coarser materials such as branches or small stems. For this reason, finishing mowers are less suitable for use in forestry and in stands with woody vegetation. Finishing mowers need to be mowed more frequently each year, as woody vegetation is not one of their strengths.
What are the differences between finishing mowers and flail mowers?
Flail mowers work with a rotor shaft that rotates in the opposite direction to the direction of travel. No blades are used, but rather tools that chop off the vegetation rather than cutting it off. Flail mowers are significantly more robust and are better suited to mulching woody vegetation. Finishing mulchers work with horizontal blades and achieve a finer cutting pattern than the flail mulcher, but are more susceptible to damage from foreign objects and are not suitable for woody material.
Applications for the finishing mower
Finishing mulchers are used wherever particularly large working widths are required and the height of the vegetation is less than 100 cm. The finishing mower also has its place in landscape and green space maintenance, as the machine is used to keep lawns in shape, particularly in parks, green spaces and sports facilities, as its extremely clean cutting pattern enables clean and even regrowth.
